They're not just about catching up, it's also a chance to go deeper than face to face allows with the handy option of no entertaining and thus an easy exit. There is a certain charm about a phonecall ever since it was invented and hello was coined. Slightly informal, speech only creates a safe space to disclose a really personal angle.
